Ally Sheedy, why can't I be you?

24 August 2016

Terrible news for the Grimsby Telegraph. Terrible news for anyone who's not Google, really. Hey, advertisers – give all your money to Google instead. Hey, everyone – give everything to Google and just give up.

Hello and welcome to Wednesday with your original/regular Diary, who is gutted to be missing the trip to Notts County early next month because we've had such great times there with friends in seasons past regardless of the result that it was the first fixture I looked for when the list came out, and indeed it's little exaggeration to say it's an away day I'd been keenly anticipating for six years, but there's no way I can justify paying 22 quid to watch a regular fourth division football match on top of as much again to get over there on the train and possibly twice as much again on food and drink. Now I'm hoping Google doesn't start penalising long sentences as well.

Still, that's the way the wind's blowing. The football is costing more and more money, and I have less and less. It's just a good job we suffered three relegations when we did, because have you seen how much it costs to watch football in the second division now.

Let's talk about the good stuff instead (yes, that means I'm giving the stadium thing a rest for the day). We still have each other. And we still have Craig Disley, who is 35 today. Happy birthday, Craig Disley!

Now, what's the other good thing left in life? Oh, of course. Mariners Promotion Ale – a beer created to celebrate… well, the clue's in the title really – will be launched this weekend. It's a 4% pale borne of a partnership between the Axholme Brewery, the Mariners Trust, and Cleethorpes' superb superb Message in a Bottle – a craft beer shop many a larger town or city would envy. Discerning tipplers in the trust bar and MIAB this weekend will be raising a glass both to Town's first promotion since 1998 and the first promotion ale since the Willy's brewery created Mariners Gold in 1991.

As much as I'd like to continue, I can't think of anything else good to write about. Let me know if you can and I'll see you next week.
