I could be your long-lost pal
25 June 2018
Trentside Diary writes: Town are about to announce a sixth new signing of the summer, and meanwhile the club has confirmed that Danny Collins has signed up for another year, while we continue to wait on Luke Summerfield and Ahkeem Rose. That will make 17 players so far. It's not enough yet but I'd prefer our manager to be measured in his signings. I trust his judgement and at least we don't have the madness of the last two occupants with far too many players signed which we just couldn't sustain financially, whether they could play or not.
It would also be a positive to manage with fewer loanees than the last season. It's good to go to a match and not to have to keep checking the programme to work out who is who. The team of 2016 achieved that. We took them to our hearts and we recognised them on the pitch. It had been a while since that had happened but who knows, maybe we can repeat that in the new season. With the fixture list out we can all plan our lives for the next year – and the anticipation is growing.
Meanwhile I'm enjoying the World Cup. There, I've said it! I don't indulge in the jingoism of some football fans – I don't really mind how England do, but it's quite nice to see them do well. But I love to be able to watch football in June and July. It eases the wasteland that is the close season. There's forty days until our first match and it's great to see the passion and determination of teams and supporters and just a party of football.
Why get sniffy about it? What's not to enjoy? It's a pleasure to watch football on TV without pundits on paid-for channels telling us repeatedly that the Premier League is the best league in the world and churning out statistics and records only relevant since 1992. I don't know about you but some of my best football memories are from earlier days. And for once the matches are on the Beeb and ITV so we can all watch. Every match I've seen so far has had something worth watching. Then once the final is played there'll be less than three weeks until our opening game against Village Green Rovers and that can't be bad. UTM!
