Patrick Conway shares his own memories of Town great Ron Rafferty
Was Ron known as Chips?
Evocative pieces by Kirky and Neville Butt on a fine centre forward, who I believe was known to some as "Chips" but am sure others will correct me. Not only was Ron a superb goalscorer, but to a young boy was a superhero. With only an occasional visit to Blundell Park, thanks to the Brigg supporters bus, one relied on the Telegraph for match reports and pictures. Invariably Ron would feature, seemingly hanging in the air, awaiting a cross from Johnny Scott, with the Harrington Street corner as a backcloth. With 1950s good looks and a fair haired quiff fashionable at the time, he could have passed as a film star. He must have been a pin up for female Town followers of the period.
