A community sing song has dropped through the letterbox

21 April 2021

Mariners fans respond to Baz's article, some delayed mail drops through the door and, with debate raging online about atmosphere, someone sends in an old chant from the terraces.

Stuart Grey fought back from the sidelines in style in 1973

Well, what an emotional afternoon yesterday - oh yes, it was also Prince Philip's funeral. Town's performance was what I was getting at in the piece from me in last week's CA Postbag. We will never give up.

The sad passing of Frank Worthington reminded me of an Evening Telegraph headline concerning our own Dave Worthington, who had scored a rare goal: 'One out the Barrel from Worthington'.

Whilst I'm in reflective mood, in 1973 I had major surgery at Scartho Road Infirmary. In those days the men's ward was just one long ward and I had been virtually unconscious for two days. When after those two days I came to in a bit of a stupor and actually thought I had died, because in the bed opposite was Town player Stuart Grey. He had been admitted with appendicitis while I was unconscious. He was surrounded by visiting team-mates (I remember Harry Wainman) and they filled his locker with packs of beer. We had an understanding ward sister and later that evening she allowed Stuart and some of us other patients to watch a TV soccer match at the end of the ward. We drank most of Stuart's beer and of course we were all on medication, but a great night!

Best wishes,
UTM

David Elvidge has a song request

Warm Greetings!

Re: 'Town songs, I don't do social media, but my suggestion would be from the days of the greatly revered Matt Tees:

Ay, Ay, Ay,
Tees is better than Pele,
Pele is a no good bum,
And so is his mate, Eusebio.

The original Mexican tune is Mariachi Ay, Ay, Ay Cielito Lindo, which you will find on You Tube. I seem to remember singing this at Boothferry Park around 1966, when the Hull fans were singing something about 'World Cup Waggy' (Ken Wagstaff).

Another song from my era: Do What You do Do Well Boys (pre-kick-off)

My song to all you good folk in Cod Almighty Towers, in thanks for the great job you do for us fans far away: From a Distance by Bette Midler.

Best wishes,

from David Elvidge

Birketts' Lincolnshire sausages were apparently better

I am a bit sympathetic with Baz's views, but largely because I know next to nothing about Jason Stockwood and Andrew Pettit. I remember Pettits the butchers in Bethlehem Street, though I used to go to Birketts in Lambert Road. Do either live locally? What is their connection with Grimsby/Cleethorpes? Can we have a detailed CV for each of them. Maybe this is already public knowledge and I have missed it. For the time being I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and look forward to better days ahead.

I am also concerned about the idea of a community club. It sounds great in principle, but do they work in practice? I believe some have reverted to private ownership.

As for the imminent takeover, I may be a pessimist but remember, the Fat Lady hasn't sung yet. She passed the audition, and has been in rehearsal for months, but the opening night is not until 3pm on Wednesday 5th May. The takeover is dependent on the two resolutions being passed.

Can someone think of an appropriate song for her to sing?

from Antony Chapman

Letters Ed responds: Both are originally from the area - that seems to be public knowledge. GDPR rules probably prevent us from publishing a detailed CV of either but I am sure a quick search on the internet will serve you well if you wanted to know about our prospective owners, Antony.

Please could you also elaborate on why the community eventually owning a community asset concerns you? We're intrigued!

Community club: we can and we should.

Damn right he is. The amount of money he is talking about might be ambitious for a lot of fans, but that’s just a question of being a little optimistic with the timing. And I’m sure there are others who can, and will contribute more.

It’s a crying shame that the Trust have never had this as an explicit aim. But then where has been the pressure from fans to do so? The naysayers believe Grimsby folk can’t do what Wimbledon have done. That sounds like a real lack of self-belief.

from Chris Parrott

Letters Ed responds: Maybe the 50+1 German model would work for Grimsby folk?
