One minute as a lion or a lifetime as a mouse

27 January 2022

Give Paul Hurst his due. For 24 hours, Daubney Diary feared that the thought "£300 grand for Ollie Palmer?" would never leave his mind. Insomnia-driven madness would surely ensue as it bounced around in the skull, trapped forever. That random muddled mutterings, alone in the corner of the Pontoon were a destiny. Again.

Then in stepped Hursty to the rescue. Daft cash for a 31-year old clogger was forgotten. Not because Palmer scored, that doesn't make him special or worth a few bob, everyone scores against us. No, the thought was replaced by "Max Wright was an unused sub. Max Wright was an unused sub."

Paul, come on mate. Love you loads but you're killing me. I went looking for explanations. Whether he leaves GTFC in a week or ten years, the rhetorical question of "what if you go for it in the 46th minute and go 2-0 down?" seems destined to appear on his managerial tombstone. This mindset might seem quite reasonable for a team on a winning run or one with a penchant for stirring comebacks. We have neither such currency. Worse, every defeat is by a single goal and reeks of a team losing because they are afraid to lose. Master Hurst, your homework before Saturday's game is to listen to this.

That two wins in 14 run. Just when you thought you couldn't get any lower, you see calls on social media for us to copy the Bromley Shithouse Model, results guaranteed. Yes, it's that time again, time for another entry in CA's Signs That Things Have Gone Very Wrong as, with a deep sigh, we add "Improve by cheating like Bromley".

We're better than that, we'll always be better than that. We're GTFC and we'll find our own way. That's why calls to sack the manager because "any other club would have done with a similar set of results" or "buy a striker, like Wrexham ffs" don't hold water either. Stick or twist by all means, but don't do it just because everyone else would. Football is full of lunatics setting bad examples, who wants to follow that suit.

Any news? No. JM-D's knack might not be as bad as feared and there's a nice ticket offer for key workers on Saturday.
