Tips for 17-18 April

Once more it is Friday afternoon when I start to write these tips. This really isn't fair. Work should provide me a few hours on Friday mornings to write these rather than making me do work which will earn the company money. Mind you, I probably shouldn't talk about work. Not because of the concerns of my editor about the Official Secrets Act after what I told you all the other week, more that once I start moaning about work I will find it hard to stop and I have to get this rattled out sharpish this week. It's currently 3.04pm and these need to be with Andy by 4:30pm.

Sod it! I'm going to have to tell you some stuff about work because it impacts on the tips. I am here this week to do the tips but I might not be next week. On Wednesday, the one just gone, I was in Chelmsford for a meeting with the guys (and girl) from AMS Radar System Division that I am working with now. The meeting was as meetings are really. Except we realised that in order to get things done in time I need to be in Chelmsford from Monday to Wednesday next week. Then they said they had organised a demo of some new technology they wanted me to see on the Thursday morning so it seems as if I will be in Chelmsford from Monday to Thursday next week. Fortunately they have already booked me in to a hotel from Sunday night till Wednesday night and I get to keep my hire car, a 1.8l Vauxhall Vectra, for another week. It's not a wonderful car but it'll do.

Actually talking of that car I might have accidentally scraped it last night getting it out of the multi-storey car park at work. I was coming down one of the ramps and I thought as I was turning on to the ramp that I was going to clip the wing mirror on the driver's side so I swung a bit wider and scraped the bumper on the far wall. It was only a brief scrape but as the car has bumpers that match the bodywork and are made of crappy plastic it shows quite a bit. The pre-rental damage report says the car was scuffed round that area of the bumper anyway so I have no plans to report it. I'll just wait till they pick it up next week and see what they say.

Oh yeah, I said all this had an effect on the tips didn't I? Well with me being away till next Thursday there is little chance that I will be able to get the tips done next week, as it is very likely that when I get back into work next Friday I will have to fill my boss in on what has been going on and won't have time to do anything for Cod Almighty. That's a bit of a bastard really and at the time of writing we don't have a back-up plan. Andy knows I won't be here but we haven't decided between us what to do about it. Maybe Miles will be called back in to fill my shoes, as it were. Then again maybe one of you is sat at home or wherever thinking that I've been doing shite recently and that you could do better. This could be your chance. If you think you can do better than me then fill in the feedback form and let us know. Actually, on the subject of you lot e-mailing us about the tips, Andy and I feel we need a new twist on the idea for next season to keep it fresh. If anyone has any thoughts about where we could take this then let us know. Fill in the feedback form or e-mail Coco or summat.

Right, enough waffle, I need to get this finished off. Then I can put my Panini Euro 2004 stickers that I got at lunchtime into the album.

Mat Coco
Chelsea v Everton (1065) 8/13 Huddersfield v Scunthorpe 11/2
Arsenal v Leeds (2189) 2/7 Margate v Morecambe 11/5
Portsmouth v Man Utd (-1453) 4/6 Rotherham v Watford 1/1
Norwich v Walsall (1202) 1/3 Charlton v Birmingham 11/10
Hartlepool v Notts County (650) 8/15 Oldham v Plymouth 9/5
QPR v Stockport (951) 1/2 Cardiff v Burnley 12/5
Macclesfield v Hull (-589) 6/5 Farnborough v Burton Albion 7/5
Carlisle v Lincoln (-610) 6/4 Northwich v Barnet 5/2
Huddersfield v Scunthorpe (818) 4/9 Hartlepool v Notts County 8/15
Northwich v Barnet (-781) 8/13 Man City v Southampton 11/4
Leigh RMI v Hereford (-1731) 4/9 Wycombe v Swindon 11/5
Chester v Scarborough (1512) 3/10 Sunderland v West Brom 7/5
Kilmarnock v Celtic (-2992) 2/7 Northampton v Southend 5/1
Hearts v Livingston (782) 4/7 Portsmouth v Man Utd 13/5
Rangers v Partick Thistle (2010) 1/7 Nottm Forest v Millwall 11/5

No real time to comment on that lot. No real point either. It's just a list of teams, some of which are in bold, and a few numbers peppered throughout it isn't it really? Let's just move on to the actual bets, slam in a quick Townwatch and get it out the door, eh. Holy fuck! Sorry, I have just run the macro that works out the potential returns.

Bet type Mat Stake Max return Coco Stake Max return
Perm 3 from 5 Arsenal, Hereford, Chester, Celtic and Rangers
38p £8.16 Margate/Morecambe, Wycombe, Sunderland, Southend and Nottm Forest/Millwall 38p £163.04
Perm 3 from 5 Chelsea, Man Utd, Norwich, QPR and Huddersfield
8p £2.49 Scunthorpe, Rotherham, Charlton, Cardiff/Burnley and Hartlepool 8p £18.78
Perm 3 from 5 Hartlepool, Hull, Lincoln, Barnet and Hearts
4p £2.59 Oldham, Farnborough, Northwich/Barnet, Southampton and Portsmouth/Man Utd 4p £12.97
Potential return:
£13.24 £194.79

See, that's really taking the piss isn't it? Coco's maximum possible return is nearly 15 fucking times as big as mine. I might as well do a Grimsby Town and give up this season, write it off as a bad dream or something.

Relegationwatch time now, it's like Townwatch only a bit bigger. Our match with Rushden is rated at 63 which means a draw. Wycombe v Swindon is rated at -563, a solid away win; Hartlepool v Notts County is rated at 650 so we don't need to worry about them either which leaves only the teams above us to think about. Chesterfield are at Port Vale who are set to win (rating of 395), Barnsley are pretty certain to win, their match at home to Brentford being given a rating of 393, Plymouth should win away at Oldham (-467) and Stockport, the form team at the minute, face QPR at Loftus Rd but with a match score of 951 I think we can safely assume a home win. So I think it's only us who are set to pick up any points this weekend. That point would take us up a place to fourth from bottom and to within a point of Brentford.

That'll do for today I reckon. No idea what will happen next week but I'm sure someone on the CA team will let you know somehow. In case you were wondering I am going to Jongleurs in Battersea tonight, at a wedding for two people from work that I don't really like (but the missus does) tomorrow and sorting stuff out for going to Chelmsford on Sunday. I hope you have more fun than I do between now and when next we speak.
