Tips for 2-3 October 2004 - the result
Andy Holt
4 October 2004
This week, despite my protestations and pleadings last week, the
CA readers are represented by another member of the Cod Almighty team. This week
you have Mr Miles Moss making the calls as to how your virtual fiver will be spent.
He seemed quite confident about his scientific methods on Friday and about his chances against Mat and FART, the statistical system, but would that confidence prove
to be misplaced? Would he be this week's Wayne Rooney and this week's Wayne Sleep?

Mat had a pretty average week really with five of his matches right and five wrong.
Very balanced. He managed three correct in his first perm and two in the second
so his return wasn't the best. In fact 66p is all he managed. Miserable, but better
than zero, I guess. David Friio must be gutted though, with all his efforts on
Saturday in vain. With his team, Plymouth, down 1-0 at home to Gillingham and
the match entering injury time at the end of the second half someone gave our
Dave the wink that Mat had tipped the Pilgrims to win. Rushing to Mr Hare's aid
he promptly netted twice. Great effort, and I'm sure Mat applauds you, David.
Sadly, in terms of Mat's return your efforts were in vain, as I say. Your match
was in his second perm where Mat only managed two correct. Doh!. One point of
interest for Mat and cause for encouragement, looking at the five matches he got
wrong all five ended in draws. So close.
FART slipped a notch from last week's heady seven to score a non-descript six.
Six is only exciting when you get four or five of those in one perm but sadly
for our statisical system the perfectly balanced three correct in each perm minimised
its return. Perm one yielded 62p and perm two, in perfect harmony, yielded 62p
too. Spooky. So, £1.24 in all. Looking at the four matches FART got wrong
we see that like Mat, all its crosses came against matches that were drawn. Very
bizarre.
Finally, we have Miles. He's away enjoying the best that Whitby has to offer so
we have no comment on his performance to mull over. Don't worry, I told him to
steer clear of norturnal well-attired gentlemen with eastern-European accents.
Well, unless they're keen on investing millions in Town that is. Miles, when he
returns, will be a little disappointed with his performance, I think. He got two
correct in perm one, and two in perm two giving a below-average four. Clearly
two twos means a very large zero in the returns column. As a result I won't even
bother mentioning how Craig Farrell's first of the season for Carlisle in the
84th minute of their game at home against Crawley Town added to Miles' total.
After all, it didn't matter. Oh yeah, and to continue the whole close but no cigar
thing going on this week, Miles got six matches wrong, right? Looking at them
it turns out that all six ended in draws too. It's just a shame that the object
of the game is to pick teams to win, rather than not lose. If it was that way
everyone would have done great this week.
So another win for FART this week. He was best in terms of return and matches
correct. But as my nan used to say stick the flat lemonade in the microwave for
a few seconds and it'll be gassy again.

I thought things were close last week. This week has made things even closer.
The CA readers, amazingly, still lead but have dropped into the red, being £1.59
down. Second is Mat £3.62 down. And still last, but only 47p behind Mat
and only £2.50 down on the CA readership we find FART. But the spreadsheet
has won the past two weeks and seems to be finding its form. If this lasts I think
we'll soon see the computer ahead of the humans. In terms of prediction accuracy,
FART is still ahead on 55% accuracy while Mat is getting 49% of his guesses correct
and you guys are last with 48% accuracy.
As I said last week, the CA staff are not particularly making a good job of this.
We need you to make this competition work. It's dead easy to do, just email Mat
at the address on the left and he'll let you know what to do. OK?
