Tips for 6-7 November 2004 - the result

Andy Holt
8 November 2004

It's a Monday and everything. Are you surprised? I am.

This week the CA readers once again have a CA writer representing them. This week it's the turn of Mr Pete Green to have a blast and try and show his extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of the British professional football leagues. Would he embarrass himself or earn glory for his children's children to dine off of? Would he prove to be Robbie Earnshaw or Ernie Wise? Let's find out, shall we? First, the bets placed:

Bet type Mat Stake Max return FART Stake Max return Pete Stake Max return
Perm 3 from 5 Arsenal, Norwich/ Blackburn, Man Utd, Crewe & Tranmere
25p £24.09 Celtic, Arsenal, Rangers, Tranmere & Man Utd
32p £8.44 Arsenal, Ipswich, Bournemouth, Mansfield & Sheffield Utd
30p £19.28
Perm 3 from 5 Sheffield Utd/ Gillingham, Chesterfield, Luton/ Wrexham, Peterborough/ Bournemouth & Torquay/ Oldham
25p £68.96 Chelsea, Wigan, Sheffield Utd, Liverpool & Hull
18p £5.88 Rotherham, Portsmouth, Scunthorpe/ Grimsby, Blackburn & Notts County
20p £43.78
Potential return: £93.05 £14.32 £63.06

Starting with Mat, last week's five was followed by another five out of ten this week. The return wasn't as good this week though as his split was three-two. So, as you well know, the three would return some cash, and indeed it did. Paul Dickov deserves at least a couple of Kola Kubes though for his efforts. His 86th-minute equaliser for Blackburn away at Norwich prevented a total loss for Mat. As it was Mat's loss was reduced to only 25p. In other words a £4.75 return.

Next we move on to FART, so to speak. The statistical system has been struggling of late. It has been getting the best results in terms of strike-rate but repeated low odds and bad perm arrangement has meant that it is languishing in last place so far. This week FART slipped to its lowest strike-rate for three weeks achieving five matches correct. FART, just as Mat before it, arranged its five in a three-two arrangement. The return here only totalled 82p, though. See what I'm saying? That's the disadvantage FART has. It equalled Mat's performance but returned £3.50 less.

And now to Pete. Another second-rate performance by a CA contributor. Why do you let us do it, eh? It's your reputation they're ruining. Pete got three matches correct but as there were two in the first perm and one in the second he returned a big fat zero. Still, at least he did better than Mark and Paul, eh? On his poor performance Pete writes: "It's a disappointing result for me in the tipping competition, but you've got to keep things in perspective. Look at what's been happening over the weekend out there in the wider world - all that conflict and misery and suffering. And I was actually at Glanford Park." I wanted to write some witty comeback, but I decided to go easy on him. He was at Glanford Park.

So Mat and FART are equally successful this week in terms of matches correct but Mat, once again, for the third week in a row, takes the prize for highest return. Or should that be lowest loss? Even a wildebeest looks cute if you stand on your head, as my nan used to say.

Bet type Mat Stake Actual return FART Stake Actual return Pete Stake Actual return
Perm 3 from 5 Arsenal, Norwich/ Blackburn, Man Utd, Crewe & Tranmere
25p £4.75 Celtic, Arsenal, Rangers, Tranmere & Man Utd
32p 82p Arsenal, Ipswich, Bournemouth, Mansfield & Sheffield Utd
30p £0.00
Perm 3 from 5 Sheffield Utd/ Gillingham, Chesterfield, Luton/ Wrexham, Peterborough/ Bournemouth & Torquay/ Oldham
25p £0.00 Chelsea, Wigan, Sheffield Utd, Liverpool & Hull
18p £0.00 Rotherham, Portsmouth, Scunthorpe/ Grimsby, Blackburn & Notts County
20p £0.00
Total return: £4.75 82p £0.00
Matches correct: 5/10 5/10 3/10
Season's return: £19.27 -£8.89 -£5.92
Season's accuracy: 50% 58% 47%

With Mat losing less than everyone else he effectively extends his lead. The gap to second place is now a whopping £25.19. The gap from the CA readers in second to FART in third is £2.97. Only Mat is in the black. Despite coming last overall, FART continues to hold firm to its grip of the accuracy title.

Anyone out there think they can better Pete's performance? If so, mail here. Where's Stuart Murray when you need him, eh?
