In a nutshell
Footballing equals of the Mariners until we fell apart in 2003, Burnley are part of the second division furniture, not bad enough to go down but not wealthy enough to compete seriously for promotion with yer Wolveses and Sunderlands and whatnot. Steve Cotterill is doing a steady enough job, and rather than sack the manager for failing to achieve the highly improbable, the Clarets are threatening legal action against the 'parachute payments' to clubs relegated from the Premiership. Bloody good luck to 'em an'all.
On t'internet
This is usually where we link to the best independent websites relating to Town's next opponents and make bitchy comments about the identikit commercial network versions. In Burnley's case, however, there aren't any independent sites, so hold your nose, download yourself some advert blocking software and hit TheLongside.co.uk, the Clarets-dedicated corner of the much-derided Sport Network operation. Much of the content seems to be pitched to a closed circle of regulars, but it's worth it for a tremendous match-by-match retrospective on Burnley's 1959–60 league championship season – including an account of a friendly against the Great Britain olympic side – and a page full of links to brilliant web-based games to waste time on at work. OK, it ain't no Ciderspace, but there are plenty of worse sites out there.

Previous encounter
Ah, the hazy, crazy days of Darren Mansaram on his own up front, and if Town and Burnley weren't freaked out enough by the utterly bizarre 6-5 home win at Blundell Park in October 2002, they had to face each other three times more in the five months that followed. After a replayed FA Cup tie, Paul Groves took his team over to east Lancashire in March 2003 on the back of rare consecutive wins over Watford and Rotherham which had lifted the side to a vertiginous 21st place in the second division league table. The Mariners took the lead just before the break as Stuart Campbell pounced on Steve Davis's slip, but the home side concluded the scoring with a 52nd-minute equaliser as half-time substitute Alan Moore was left unmarked at a corner. All hopes of survival seemed to break with Stacy Coldicott's leg: Town took just two points from the remaining seven games, crashing out of the division in bottom place. After that, of course, things starting getting quite bad.

Team news
No injuries or suspensions; probably an unchanged line-up from the Notts County game
Tonight's cuptastic tie will be officiated by none other than C W Oliver: a man who sounds like a 1932 entry in Wisden. Hailing from Northumberland, Mr Oliver doshes out a relative paucity of coloured cards, averaging 2.2 yellows a match last season, with three red cards waved in total. Indeed, four matches went by without him reaching in to his pocket at all, save to search for a hanky.
Town were not blessed with Mr Oliver last season, but we had him twice in 2005–06, most notably in the home match when we stuffed Notts County 4-0 – a night when Kalala scored a screamer, Gritton had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside and McMahon smacked Bolland in the mouth, causing the pieman to be sent off and Bolland to retire hurt. The other match he took was away at Bury on Boxing Day, when we won 2-1. That would be the game with fancily dressed fans, a streaker and a good penalty shout (Reddy) turned down by yer man.
Best odds
Town 13/5 (Blue Square)
draw 12/5 (Bet365)
Burnley 11/10 (Ladbrokes)
Mat's tip
We haven't played Burnley for a few years now but we have a tremendous record against them at Blundell Park. Let's be honest though: there are now two divisions between these sides, so the previous record in league games counts for little here. It's one of them games where I can honestly make a case for all three possible results, so I won't be betting on this one. If you do have a punt, remember you're most likely betting on 90-minute markets even though the tie has to be settled on the night.

England's longest mainline railway tunnel that runs entirely underground is Totley Tunnel, which runs between the south-western edges of Sheffield and the Derbyshire village of Grindleford, on the Hope Valley line linking Sheffield with Manchester. It was completed in 1893 and is 6,230 yards (5.7km) in length.
