The one with lots of praise
3 September 2003
In this week's Postbag: spoonyerisms; two game winning streak; sweaty beer; where is Tony B?; flattery gets you everywhere; a man of few words, but all of them nice; Town will do "alright"; fishy fingerer; and what a hummer
I listened to Spoony during the Geordies penalty shootout and found him to be like a cooler version of Dave Gibbons. The habit of interrupting the commentator just as a penno was about to be missed was hilarious. Not to mention going 'Come on Shay boy, make yourself a hero'. I also have to mention the disillusioned Liverpool fan from Gloucester. That was comedy at its finest. Nice to know that the Wurzels are Liverpool fans anyway.

In response to Mr Wilson's laziness in his preview of the Bristol City match I have spent a whole three and a half minutes finding out the last time Grimsby won twice in three days.
Remember Easter 2001 anyone? On 14th April of that year we beat Watford 2-1 at home after being 1-0 down at half-time. Two days later we went
to West Brom and Luke Cornwall nicked off with the only goal of the match.

In response to Bob Santwich, yes i do remember beeroff. What a great word. Here in Corby it's called an offsales, the place is full of sweaties! I get get more homesick everyday, mate.

Having just read the Q&A about Cod Almighty entitled "Who Are Ya", I'd like to know why Tony Butcher isn't listed on the contributors page.

Well, we asked him ages ago but he never got round to writing it. [Letters Ed]
I don't know the third answer to your shirt competition but excellent site regardless. It is always entertaining. Keep up the good work.

In your season preview you ask for a fan's predictions so I am giving you mine.
The season will continue like it has so far. A loss for every win, a draw for every loss and win. Eventually Town will have about 60 points. I
will be happy with just finishing outside the play-off zone. If we finish in the play offs I would not want to go through the agony of losing
in them.
Town are a second division club and can compete at this level. They are starting to prove it after a shaky start although maybe Paul Groves
needs a more experienced head on the bench to make decisions. I doubt Graham Roger is the right man to make important decisions while the boss is
on the pitch. We shall see although hind sight is always a wonderful thing once you can use it.
A shame Laurens Ten Heuvel didn't make it in the second division. He looked a good player when I saw him at Boston in a friendly. Your diary
is right about the club's website harshly declaring him as a flop. He showed promise and many fans seem to be having a go at Groves. If they had seen Ten Heuvel at Boston they would have agreed that he looked a good player and would have persisted for a couple of games in stead of letting into him at the first chance.
The fans need to be patient. It is a hard time with the suspensions and injury to Iain Anderson a player who has looked like the new Kevin
Donovan. Let us do our thing at home and we will not need to worry about away games much.

See, I don't understand this thing about Rodger. He always comes across as an articulate and intelligent bloke on the radio. I have far more faith in him than I ever did in Lennie 'Car Salesman' Lawrence. [Letters Ed]
As a staunch supporter of the Electronic Fishcake I haven't visited your site much since your launch. Today I loaded your site for the first time since the end of last season. It pains me to say it but here goes: Your site is now probably the best Mariners website going. I feel I might have to change my home page to point to your site now. I look at the Fishy and I can see the difference now. You guys write not just to fill up some space like many Fishy pieces seem to. You guys write some excellent pieces which are always great to read if long on occasion.
One thing puzzles me. Why do Tony Butcher's reports appear on The Fishy and on your site? I thought Tony B wrote just for the Fishy. Are you
stealing his reports?
Keep writing.

Cheers for the kind words Alan. I visit the Fishy too, so I'd suggest you keep visiting both sites - it can't hurt. As for Tony's reports, well, Tony says he just writes for Town fans. We have his full permission to publish his reports. Did you see the Tony B interview we published a while back? [Letters Ed]
Re: the Bristol City preview
I have not been able to stop humming Steal My Sunshine by Len for the past two days.
The defeat versus Bristol City has been made tolerable by your witty and amusing coverage. Thank you! Your coverage won't make up for Town
losing every game for the rest of the season however, if they choose to do that.

Cheers for the praise all. We will publish negative feedback you know, if anyone out there really hates us. Go on, I dare you.
