Postbag: a little bit of politics
1 July 2005
Afternoon. Welcome to the weekend with your latest installment of the hastily-put-together,
ramshackle letters page. This week's letters page is absolutely packed full of letters - some forming
words as long as 'comprehension'. Fwoar!
Post my bag at postbag@codalmighty.com and what you say will appear
below like some kind of modern witchcraft and sorcery.

The young ones
Tell Miss B Elton’s song “Grimsby” was on the Album (Converted to CD?) “Caribou” circa
1975.

The thin blue line
Just thought I'd point out that Nottingham Forest are in the North region
of the Carling Cup whilst their more Northerly neighbour Notts County are in the Southern region.
Couldn't be bothered to check the rest of the
clubsto see if there are any other anomalies but I'm sure someone else will.

Maybe baby
Thanks Francis - I agree.
As the aforementioned resident of 'zombiefied Docklands' I was a tad surprised at Diary's foreceful
views on this fine urban landscape in which I'm privilleged to dwell. Specially surprised since I'd taken
the time to share my reminscence about St Elton of John. Rude get (Diary bloke, not Elt).
Docklands might not be up there with Riby Square and the glories of that wasteland bit between
Freeman Street and the railway line, but it'll do me fine, ta.
PS That 'Grimsby' song by Elton John is nothing to boast about. Horrible tossed-off tune. So to
speak.
By the way, there's a Humberston in Chile.

"Would you like a pinch of salt with that?"
That Diary fella's a cynic
isn't he? Does he have a hat to eat when Simba and Mufasa sign for us?

Blackadder
Scoring at the scousers In 1980. Well we didn't… did we… no. Bloody Kevin 'Killer' Kilmore
should have put us one up but the sight of an onrushing Clemence and the thought of someone on the
Kop throwing a mobile phone at him (they were bloody heavy in them days) put him off so much that
he put the resultant one on one chance out for a throw in. I seem to remember Tony "Fordy" Ford put
one just over the bar towards the end that even the Liverpool fans wanted to go in. Thing was it was
absolutely no disgrace to lose 5 - 0 to THAT Liverpool side on THAT day, it was truly breathtaking
football.

Friday night live
I have to disagree with the suggestion of Big
Wok as a good place to eat in Lincoln. I spent three years at Uni in the town and I wasn't a great
fan of the place. Plus it is a long long walk to Sincil Bank. The Brayford Pool area is now chock-a-
block with pubs and bars offering the usual stuff and that's possibly a twenty minute walk to the
ground. There are couple of fish and chip shops and other various fried beyond all comprehension
burger joints. But I think in general the rule of thumb in the town for food (or at least for my digestive
system, not a nice thought I know) is that the top of the hill is where the best food is and it gets worse
the further you go down it until you are at the McDonalds on the roundabout at the bottom end of the
A46. Pub wise, though, best decent ale in town I could find (and a nice atmosphere when not wearing
Grimsby shirt) was the Golden Eagle on the southside of the tracks at the end of the High Street.
Good pies at Sincil Bank. They still got the air raid siren?
By the way - does anyone have a good recipie for making strawberry cheesecake?

Mr Bean
re: Mitch Ben on the glasto pages,
and not hearing of him. He pops up regularly with Punt & Dennis on their Radio2 comedy shows, as a
musician singing songs of comedic lyrical content. May I recommend keeping the radio on after
Jonathan Ross on Saturday morning to listen to Roland Rivron's improv music show. Mitch is the bass
player, and Marcus Brigstock on guitar. Always includes a muso guest who is up for it: Nick Heywood
last week.
