1966 was a great year for English football: Grimsby beat Scunthorpe 7-1. This happy ending began with one of the finest goals Blundell Park has ever witnessed – a glorious volley from Matt Tees, whose assured finishing and sublime technique are still spoken of today in reverent tones by those lucky enough to have seen him play.
Bonetti, McDermott and Mendonca are all very well for the youngsters, but the Mariners still had heroes before they invented the internet – and Tees was one of the greatest of all. Signed from Airdrie in 1963, he notched a goal every two games in two spells at Blundell Park, ensuring his place in GTFC folklore for generations to come, and eventually resulting in loads of people badgering Cod Almighty to do a
T-shirt with him on it.
By popular demand, then, CA is proud to commemorate another Mariners legend. Ladies and gentlemen, may we present... the Tees tee. If you've never heard of him, just buy a couple for your mum and dad.
