Don't fear the reaper
17 September 2026
Your Guest Diarist, like the rest of that glorious horde of Town fans, that hive, that borg, awoke exultant with the knowledge that our best kept secret had remained intact. The ever-improving Mr Turi had signed a thoroughly deserved two year contract, celebrating by downing a diet coke with Mr Artell which contained the Town shilling. It seems extraordinarily curious that a season of relentless improvement, increasing maturity and man of the match performances had attracted negligible outside interest. Even a goal of the week to ice the cake did not seemingly activate the wormtongue agitators from other 'bigger' clubs. Or maybe it did and old fashioned traits like loyalty, common sense and trust prevailed. Géza Dávid Turi is a Town player, 'nuff said.
I have been watching Town for over sixty years now and had the privilege of watching some great central midfield players. I won't bore you with them today but it is nice to add another to the pantheon. In recent times Conteh was good, McEachran was better for a time but Turi is the real deal. Neither of his predecessors you ever felt would be with us for long, they just played for Town a while. Neither, subsequently, have made much of a mark - Bromley and Chesterfield do not a great career make do they?
The Town Reaper, having glanced at the upcoming fixture list, will be desultorily sharpening their scythe. We play most of the bottom eight in the next run of league games. If the mood on the pitch matches that on the terraces Town will go on a run and teams who have had a poor start might panic after being slapped by a haddock. No Gentle Reader, no - do not spoil this vibe by pointing out that typically Grimsby fans are disappointed in this scenario. The Collective will overturn that Pact. Anyone else watching Silo?
I was on a train recently and, looking up, noticed that Sheena Easton was sitting opposite. I remember little of her life (9-5 (not that one), Prince, Scottish). Homing in on the latter I ask her who she supports. She laughed and said she only ever knew one team - Grimsby. WTF I said. Oh I met him online playing a video game, his name was Nicky Law and we became so obsessed that his team was relegated. When I woke up in the morning I remembered this dream which is unusual in itself. But when I looked up Sheena on Wiki I discovered she became an ardent gamer after her singing career tanked. With World of Warcraft a particular favourite. World of Warcraft came out in 2004. Spooky, eh? Nicky's Wiki page charts a thoroughly depressing career but lists no hobbies. Are dreams a glimpse into a parallel universe? I will leave you with that one. See yer.
