Night games, Town goals. These are a few of my favourite things

22 February 2022

I was musing about postponements after the frustration of Friday and how they might impact the rest of the season. At the moment there are just two to fit in, so another couple of Tuesday night games to plan. Lovely! We always love a match under the floodlights.

Is it fortuitous that the last game of the season away at Eastleigh is on the sixth anniversary of our return to the football league? Six is lucky in some cultures. Could be a sign! Yes, I know I'm getting ahead of myself but wouldn't it be great if we still had something to play for. For "great" I really mean excruciatingly stressful but I'd still want to be there and we would take as many as they are prepared to squish inside the Silverlake stadium. With a capacity of 5,500 should we start worrying that we'll get tickets now? Or try to pretend nothing's going to happen so as not to tempt fate. You have probably gathered I don't give up hope of a positive outcome until it is absolutely impossible. Makes you wonder why I became a Town fan. To counter my natural enthusiasm maybe?

The Telegraph sports reporter covered six Town players or loanees who have now moved elsewhere and "very few have prospered since". I'm not quite sure what the point of the article was. To make us feel better about them moving on? We have seen many players leave and then go on to have really good spells elsewhere. I'm not going to rejoice at these recent players not settling in at other clubs. Life in the lower leagues is often hand to mouth for players with annual contracts and a nomadic career. As long as they don't play well against us, which of course they always do, it's good to see them working. Players who don't do so well at Town are probably not a good fit with the manager or how he sets the team up. It doesn't mean there might not be a decent player in there somewhere. I think particularly of those who arrived during Runaway's tenure. How many players' confidence did he destroy?

The other way round, a favourite with fans, Omar Bogle hasn't prospered since he left us but he's made it clear he won't return, so we need a new Omar. Truth be told of those recent departees, I would have liked Alex Hunt to have stuck around for longer, he seemed to create opportunities for us. Hopefully Abrahams finds his shooting boots or Dieseruvwe just clicks up front. A sprinkling of other results going our way and we're in the play-off mix.

We're not in action tonight but if Wealdstone could get one over on Solihull Moors, Weymouth over Bromley and, yes, Chesterfield over Wrexham, plus Halifax and Notts County could be a draw with a couple of sendings-off each, that would do nicely, thank you. UTM!
