Cod Almighty | Match Stats

Tuesday 8 March 2022

Conference Premier

Southend United 1 Dalby (62, pen)

Grimsby Town 0

Attendance: 7205 (340 away fans)

Cod Almighty man of the match: Harry Clifton

Clifton was the Duracell battery man of the Town team and was everywhere. So 11/10 for hard work and constant effort. You can't fault the lad for trying. One or two others could follow his example.

Cod Almighty un-man of the match: Giles Coke

Sorry, but was he even on the pitch? You wouldn't have noticed if you'd not looked at the team sheet. In a word – anonymous.

Us

A shadow of our former selves. Solid in defence, but lacking pace and quality in midfield which shows why we can't score goals. Abrahams works really hard but got no service, everyone looks to McAtee but he's not a one man team.

Think back to 2016 and there's nobody like Nathan Arnold, Nolan, Amond or Bogle. So even if, by some fluke we did sneak into the play-offs, don't bother looking at hotels around Wembley. We aren't going to be there.

Them

Just a non-League side in Essex. Big athletic guys devoid of talent who run around for 90 minutes and pass the ball well around the back. There are loads of similar sides down here who properly belong in the National League South. They are Bishop's Stortford on steroids. Don't split hairs by telling me Bishop's Stortford isn't in Essex because it's not much further from the county line than it is from Blundell Park to the other side of Grimsby Road.

They won't even be in the play-offs although they are not yet reconciled to having a long stay at this level.

Official warning

Mr Lamport

He was OK and made all the right decisions. Doing nothing wrong and most things right gets him a 9.1111. Can we have him again please?

Readers' digest

The Southend arterial road was closed at 8.00pm and so it took an hour to detour around the outskirts. There is no escape for either side.
