The Pillars of Grimsby Town
10 March 2022
Mr Target Demographic writes: First off, I have to apologise for my absence last week but it was A-level MOCK week. I felt revision for my examinations was perhaps more important than my endless rambling of the issues with the squad or previous results. That being said, I don't know how much the revision helped as my Tudor paper was far from my best work. If there are any avid historians that can answer a 25-marker on if there really was a crisis in the Mid-Tudor period of Edward VI and Mary I, I'd be more than happy to hear from you.
Speaking of previous results, we did lose on Tuesday night, yes. However, against a very in form Southend team. Although it would have been nice to win, I'm less annoyed than other people seem to be. I'm not too sure if that's because I'm still high on the exhilaration of Saturday or because I'm much more confident we'll bounce back to winning ways rather than go on a 10-game losing streak like last time. In addition to Southend being (alongside us) one of the in form teams of the division, our squad is also full of injuries with, I'd say, at least three starters absent from the team Tuesday night. This lack of squad depth is something I'm not confused about or angry at Paul Hurst for. We can't forget the squad he inherited after he who shall not be named "resigned" was full of dead wood on extremely high wages, so I'm still impressed with the squad he's managed to build this season.
In my opinion, people just sometimes need to remember that, although we have competed with second division teams in the past, we are no longer at these levels. We need to respect the league we're in now and that it is a war of attrition rather than something that will happen quickly without effort.
In other news around Town this week, there has been a lot of talk around the pillars that hold up the Main Stand. Being a season ticket holder within the Main Stand for many seasons, this is a topic I can certainly get behind. Although I understand why the pillars are there, they often obstruct my view of the edge/just inside the box. This can be a blessing in disguise as it saves me from witnessing Sousa's "attempts" at goal. However, most of the time it is more a hinderance to my viewing.
Perhaps the pillars in the Main Stand are like the five pillars of Islam, all representing different aspects of Town that make our club what it is and thus can never be removed. One of these pillars has a sign saying that there is no smoking in this area…a core aspect of Town it has to be said. I realise after writing all this I have no real plan for how I would remove them as engineering is a topic I know very little about, unlike the mid-Tudor period.
