Confused; do we dislike Chelsea or Newcastle mostest?
17 March 2022
Oh, you came here for some Thursday GTFC news? Well, here’s how a Thursday rolls: I'll post this, soon thereafter Paul Hurst will give a standard press conference, and the Mariners shall travel towards Boreham Wood for the weekend's fixture, probably with a predictable squad comprising last Saturday’s 16 (most likely with Adam Crookes and Giles Coke and a reserve goalie or two travelling too). We could speculate as to any signings, which seem unlikely, but could yet be hidden for a Saturday morning announcement, as per Callum Jones pre-Woking.
I was all set to point out we'd not heard about the BHW at BP game yet, but they only went and re-arranged it last night for the 10th May. Pesky kids. (The C.A. boffins have already updated the fixture list; I'll leave to tomorrow's diarist to preview BHW, I know as much about them as our previous manager probably does.
Tomorrow night marks the return of Ivano Bonetti to Blundell Park for a speaker event, and we've remembered him with a timely article for nostalgia for those of us at the right age, or just some nice GTFC history for those a little too young. Last we heard the Mariners Trust were advertising the last few tickets, so worth checking social media if you want to go but haven't purchased as yet....
Right, two thirds of the season down, and Tuesday's four Conference games went pretty well for us, as GTFC remained in the final play off spot. This Saturday, 22 of the sides in our division play at 3pm. No I haven't worked out who DOESN'T play, I'll leave that to you to figure out, but Bromley host Wrexham as the other play-off battle, aside from us at BHW.
And when Saturday comes, we'll no longer be able to say, we've played everyone in the division this season except Boreham Wood. Hopefully we will retain our play-off spot a little longer, about 12 games longer please, until the actual play-offs begin.
Which reminds me, how many sides remain in a) the COnference title race and b) the play-off hunt? Given Halifax have games in hand on Stockport and Chesterfield, they must be title contenders still; so I’m answering 3 for a). For b) surely 15 points is too big a gap for Altrincham to bridge, so I’ll say the top 12 are play-off contenders. That question might, at a stretch, make Saturday's Southend vs Altrincham tie slightly more interesting to Mariners fans (12th versus 13th), but even typing that I’m unconvinced. There's a debate to be had but maybe not for a week or two more, certainly a competitive division still.
And finally, did you know there's another footballing Danny Amos, and this one is an Israeli goalkeeper? No, me neither, but it is true....
UTM!
