Is it unprofessional of me to snigger? Hell yes!

30 August 2022

Have you noticed how the nights are pulling in? And the air is getting a lot cooler? I'm not a hot weather person so I don't mind the summer slowly disappearing, but I'll be sorry to see these August football days slip away. Five games in and we're supposed to be able to take a look at the table. We might think it shows how teams are shaping up, but given our experiences we all know it's pretty meaningless really. This time last year we were flying high, then we crashed and burned but I seem to remember it all came good in the end.

I was outside yesterday and I heard some sort of tannoy announcement and loud cheers and jeers. We live about equidistant from Trent Bridge, the City Ground and the County Ground so regularly hear cheers, boos, etc at various volumes. To be fair I love it, it's so exhilarating. A quick conversation with Mr Trentside: "No, no football today, must be something on at the cricket ground". Had a quick search online to settle my curiosity. Oh, there is football, non-League football though. Another little chuckle to myself. How far we have come already.

Little changes, does it? A year ago Hurst was being pressured to sign a new striker and he has been saying he is trying to do that ever since. We would all like to see a 20+ goals-a-season incomer but we should only bring in someone who Hurst thinks will fit the current set up. He's melded a team, let's not break it. Get a few of the current squad up to full fitness and it could feel very different.

Saturday was a game of two halves in every sense. Let's have a shout out to Harry Clifton. He comes in for some stick from certain quarters but it was great to see one of our own have the last laugh on Saturday. All players will have good games and bad but I think we'd struggle to find any player with the passion for Town that he has. He is genuinely one of our own and, yes, I might be sentimental writing on a non-sentimental subject, but I happily cut him some slack, if needed. Cue the anti-Harry brigade……

Anyway back to the tables. I know, I know, I said it's meaningless but it's always nice to have a little snigger when teams I don't like stumble out of the blocks, even if I know they will probably get going eventually. Oh, how lovely it would be for them to have a poor season. We all have our teams we don't like. Whether it's our former rivals, nearest neighbours, glory boys or just a team that we've taken a dislike to because of how they or their fans have behaved towards us at some point. I'm sure we all have a long list.
