The kids are alright

24 July 2025

Good morning campers! Your Guest Diarist joins you fresh in from a walk along the Sleaford avoiding line, a place where mysterious trains edge past you so slowly that you are tempted to leap aboard and live the life of a 1930s hobo.

Pointless pre-season Town victories are rat-tat-tatting in. After beating a slightly ridiculously over-competitive Lincoln Mr Artell sent another side down to the fens 24 hours later to play plucky Boston. So, everyone played who had not played the night before, bar the MIA Danny Rose. And the kids made up the numbers. Kieran Green made it his life's mission to head clear Cropper's booming long throws, Town scored two neat goals via Amaluzor and Staunton and the only blight on the night was Auton getting crocked in a goalmouth scrimmage. We conceded late in the game so the new normal continues.

You can say winning these games is ne vaut pas un clou, perhaps more likely if you are French actually, but winning, scoring, looking interested, these are all plus points for fans paying good money to watch. Players getting their first goal for the club helps confidence. Young sprogs getting a run-out and not making costly mistakes is another step on the road to first team football. So it's a good week so far.

We have an unwritten rule here at CA where we are not supposed to look at the table early on in the season. But I have a habit of having a gander before it all kicks off. Four Bs this season and six Cs! That all conspires to start us in 14th place. But pity poor old Walsall - 12 points clear at the top a few months ago and now sitting rock-bottom owing to the alphabet. Funny old game, eh? See yer.
