Squally seas. The ebbs and flows of being a Town fan.

4 January 2022

Well that was a game and a half wasn't it? Before I go any further, I would just like to point out that I am taking a little piece of credit for us snatching that deserved point when it looked like it was going to be (another) one of those games. As a fisherman's daughter I remember wives never washed clothes on the day their husbands sailed because it would wash away their luck, and probably the boat too. Whilst I wouldn't call myself superstitious, that has stuck with me and I never wash my Town scarf if we're on a good run. I bet a fair few of you have your rituals around football. The scarves went in the wash on New Year's Eve and look what happened! It feels like it could be a turning point in our season. Fingers crossed, toes crossed, everything crossed.

"Hurst has lost the dressing room?" Get in the Humber with you. If they weren't playing for Hurst, each other, the club and the fans then I'm not sure who they were playing for. It must be easy to battle away at tough opposition when you're riding high like we were at the start of the season. Buoyed along on belief and enthusiasm. The dynamics of the squad were showcased yesterday. A group of footballers playing as a team and not letting their heads drop. Just so relieved we got a point to show for it, although we deserved more, or the Hurst-out brigade would have been out in full force. As it is they will be back with a vengeance the next time we drop points.

I will touch briefly on Badge-gate but you would be just as well to listen to Chairman Wow again.

I looked at the updated badge and my first thought was I didn't love it because, being a purist, a trawler wouldn't have been flying a flag like that. It was however the smallest of tweaks. Maybe it's decommissioned and now a pirate radio ship: apologies to any younger readers, ask your parents or grandparents. Reality is, a trawler doesn't represent Grimsby any more, it just lives in our heads and for anyone under 40 it's meaningless.

The badge is something we feel strongly about and Jason has agreed that mistakes were made in how it was introduced but, honestly, we really do have some frothing-at-the-mouth Town fans. The nasty brigade and the "I care more than you" lot were out in force. Yes, it was clumsy, but after the Chairman's statement there were one or two trying to back track and suggest they only got so heated because they care. The rest of us don't, obviously. It's pointless appealing to some to stay civil because they just can't or don't want to. There were a few who were almost certainly major-shareholder toadies who went with "that's it, they've lost our trust now". Some people, what can you say? They haven't lost my trust or belief that they will try to do the best for the club both this season and for the long term. I'm sure there are many more of us out there.

Wishing you health and happiness for 2022. UTM!
