Cod Almighty | Diary
A nine-year-old tradition
14 June 2022
Domestic Diary writes: Grimsby Town have announced that their "traditional pre-season curtain-raiser" against Cleethorpes will take place on 9 July. According to Cod Almighty's own results database, we have played them in July eight times in the last nine years. The exception was 2020, when the start of the season was delayed by Covid and the fixture was not just the start but also the end of our warm-up programme, aside from the odd game of darts. We have come a long way since.
Grimsby Town have made the pages of Electrical Times, thanks to our shirt sponsorship from myenergi. We have moved on from Young's, apparently keen to assert the progressive diversity of our local economy, but let's keep "We only sing when we're fishing" in our playlist. Some traditions are even more than nine years old, and it is the most Grimsby thing, to turn a taunt into a source of pride.
Besides it withstands the current trend to perform all our chants on fast forward. And "We only sing when we're generating renewable energy" lacks a certain something. "We only sing when we're charging" scans better, but it is likely to be misrepresented by shit-stirring Times journalists or the police considering the kick-off times and away seat allocations for our fixtures.
You want speculation dressed up with a headline which makes it look like a genuine scoop? You'll have to go to the Grimsby Telegraph for that. That's your lot.
