Every bird that sings deserves to fly
25 December 2025
Here we are again gentle reader. It's Christmas! Again. There is a no-fly zone over your Guest diarists house owing to a complete absence of children in the neighbourhood. So all is quiet in the pre-dawn darkness. But, wherever you are, I hope that he's been and that today is merry and joyful. I take solace in christmases past - my Grandads tales of going to the match one Christmas day, me getting a lace-up leather football in 1962 when the ground was frozen so hard the ball bounced as high as the moon and then we made a slide on the pond. Make some new memories today eh?
The temptation, on a losing streak, is to slag the manager off. But, to quote the Landman, "the moral high ground gets real windy at night". Most of us have been supporting Town for a very long time. And we sure as hell have seen times a lot thinner than this. The absolute fact is that Grimsby Town lose more matches than they win. It was ever thus. We don't support them because they are good. We support them for many other reasons. One of them was captured on a lovely video by the club recently when a gruff but kindly Mr Artell was filmed surprising a young boy at his home with presents and the promise of a trip on the team bus to an away game in the new year. The kid has had it tough but our manager still made him promise several times to be good - no doubt something he repeats to his team before they take to the pitch.
As for the multitude of naysayers, well Dylan said it best, "I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken." We fans can all think we know better, but do we really? Whatever happens we are all Town aren't we?
Happy Christmas, and here's to a great new year full of football. See yer.
